The Back Bay Science Center (BBSC) is a facility that provides year-round education programs centered around watershed education and estuarine ecology. These positions assist with the coordination and implementation of aquatic education programs and special events that operate out of the BBSC and surrounding Upper Newport Bay Ecological Reserve (UNBER). It also provides support with the development and presentation of interpretive/educational programs for school field trips (targeted for 6th-college level), facility tours, teacher workshops, programs for the general public, and much more.
This position organizes volunteers and interns to support projects and general program duties. Assists with the training and scheduling of volunteers for the collection of marine life, aquaria feeding and maintenance, and data sampling methods. Includes the development of program materials to help volunteers, educators, and students properly identify and categorize plants, fish & wildlife found in UNBER. The use of computer software is also required for tracking data and maintaining program records for grant reporting.
Additionally, this position oversees the care and maintenance of several large indoor and outdoor aquariums at the BBSC. These saltwater tanks house numerous local marine species which are a large component of the educational programming. The incumbent will be responsible for maintaining proper temperature and water quality, regular cleanings and equipment checks, as well as animal husbandry duties including regular feedings. Assist lead staff in various aspects of field projects involving data collection, species and habitat protection, and/or restoration projects. Assist in creating and developing text to encourage environmental awareness using a variety of media sources that may include brochures, exhibits, signs, maps, identification guides, publications, press releases, and other media materials. Respond to public information requests and public phone calls relating to issues at the Reserve.
