The work of Dr. Chris Schell, Assistant Professor in the Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management at UC Berkeley, will be the singular focus of this year's State of Biodiversity. Chris studies the intersections of society, ecology, and evolution to understand how wildlife are rapidly adapting to life in cities. Drive across any major city (including San Diego) and you’ll notice some neighborhoods have more trees, greener parks, and bigger yards. Often, these are the markers of social inequity, with wealthier neighborhoods awash with shade and less affluent neighborhoods sliced up by freeways. The impact of this extends beyond people, with profound consequences for the wildlife within cities. Chris' talk will highlight how social issues, especially economic and racial inequities, shape the ecology and evolution of wildlife and the feedback loop of wildlife ecology on the human condition.
The in-person event in the Theatre will be held Thursday, March 3, 2022 from 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM. Following the formal session, we’ll have a Happy Hour in the El Mirador Rooftop for continued discussions and networking opportunities, wrapping at 6:00 PM. You can register for in-person event or virtual at The Nat | The State of Biodiversity (sdnhm.org). Space is limited. To help ensure an accurate attendance number, admission for this event is $2. That said, please consider selecting the suggested $20 ticket price or adding a donation of any amount during checkout to support the Museum's mission and help make this event as accessible as possible.
